A musical project by Gigi Giustiniani
Mycelial Electronic Downtempo · Milan, Italy · Active since 2021
Electronic musician and documentary filmmaker. Diereva weaves analogue synthesis, field recordings and live improvisation into cinematic, introspective soundscapes.
Diereva is rooted in the idea of music as a living ecosystem: layered, interconnected, and in constant flux. The name itself evokes the structure of a tree, and the project draws on organic field recordings, analogue synthesis, and the unpredictable energy of live improvisation.
The music moves through the territories of organic downtempo — shifting between ambient drifts and tighter rhythms — while maintaining a consistently tactile and cinematic character. Every track is born from physical materials: sounds captured in real environments or extracted from film, then processed through analogue hardware and shaped in real time. This duality, ranging from the exploration of live sets to the precision of studio composition, is the very soul of Diereva.
This approach to sound is inseparable from Gigi's career as a documentary filmmaker. Specialising in social documentaries and mountain cinema, with fieldwork in Mauritania, Benin, Brazil, and Ethiopia (often involving music-related research), he brings to his productions a practice of "deep listening" and a visual sensibility matured in remote human environments.
However, his connection to music has much deeper roots: it began with the study of the violin at the age of four, followed by the electric bass in his teens, exploring genres far removed from electronic music for decades. It was only around the age of 40 that he encountered synthesizers and machines; the Diereva project was born from this collision between acoustic rigour and new digital possibilities.
